It’s nice to be – finally, and haltingly – moving into warmer weather, shaking off the winter comfort food and bringing in lighter, healthier options.
Wahaca, one of my favourite restaurants, launched their summer menu last week and they really focus on seasonal produce which is great.
Here are my thoughts on just some of the things we ate (we never learn, always over-order!)..
Cactus and courgette tacos These were interesting; the cactus has a salty tang like seaweed. It was very strong, I’m not sure I’d order it again.
Corn bread and mole A new side dish, but it really could have been on the dessert menu it was so sweet! The bread was delicious but I don’t think I’m a fan of the bitter chocolate taste of mole.
New potato taquitos These were a winner – crisp fried tortilla filled with soft crushed potato covered in a mountain of salad and feta with a fantastic orange habanero chilli sauce. Addictively good.
Ice cream with caramel ‘cajeta’ sauce Not a new dish but worth an honourable mention as some of the nicest ice cream I’ve tasted. The caramel isn’t too sweet and the pumpkin seeds give a delicious toasty crunch.
Meanwhile in home cooking, I bought the new Ottolenghi book, Plenty and had fun last weekend trying some of the dishes out.
Socca A chickpea flour pancake with caramelised onions and oven-dried tomatoes. Makes for a quick and filling brunch.
Crunchy mushroom pappardelle I subbed the broccoli for asparagus and used less cream (though it needed it all, really). The crunchy breadcrumb and lemon zest topping was lovely and I’m now addicted to putting toasted breadcrumbs on all my pasta dishes.
