Lisbon-bound

January 4th 2011

So who else is loving being back at work today?! At least I have something to look forward to – just booked a long weekend in Lisbon for my birthday next week. We forwent a real holiday last year due to moving house so it will be nice to get away to slightly warmer climes for a few days (although the current forecast isn’t so cheery..).

We’re staying at the Hotel Da Estrela which looks really nice – housed in a historical palace building and done out in a modern style with touches of retro schoolhouse.

I’ve made my customary map of places to visit – I’m particularly looking forward to the Saturday Flea Market at Campo de Santa Clara, of course. If you have any more tips of things to sightsee, eat in or shop at, please share!

Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara < Great views of the city from here on a sunny day!

I think you'll enjoy Lisbon, because even if the weather won't cooperate, you can always jump into the stores and do some shopping. Lisbon is not known as a major shopping city, but shopping is one its best-kept secrets. You'll find wonderful old shops selling all kinds of retro-looking stuff, all very unique to Portugal.
This is the best shopping guide to the city: http://www.lisbonlux.com/lisbon-shops/, and I suggest a stop at the following shops: A Vida Portuguesa, Casa das Velas do Loreto, Jimmy Portuguese Styleshop, A Arte da Terra, Atelier 55, Porta 16, and Bairro Arte.
As for the flea market, it's actually more junk than anything and kind of disappointing.
    Enjoy!

I never miss the Pasteis de Belem! It does get very busy though, but worth it for their pastries! I always buy a box.

Hi Katie, I've just discovered your blog and I love it! Really looking forward to seeing what you do with your lovely new house. Owning my own little slice of abode in London is but a distant dream for me at the moment, so your blog is aspirational reading!

I too have spent most of today planning when I can next go on holiday – Lisbon looks amazing, nice to escape at this time of year – it's just too depressing otherwise!

I spent 10 days with my dad a couple of years ago and had a great time. I think it may be my favourite place in the world. I would definitely reccommend you visit the town of Sintra. It's about a 25min train ride from the centre of Lisbon. It's a beautiful place just to walk around and there's a palace and a Moorish castle (although they were closed on the day I visited). Cascais/Estoril is also really nice but I don't know if you would want to visit a beach in January. I really liked the massive supermarket in Centre Commercial because I love finding new food in foreign countries. There's also a funfair on the topfloor which I missed but sounds fun. Sorry for the essay but hope you have a great time and look forward to reading about your trip.

Ooh, I love the new layout – apparently it's been too long since I popped a look at your site. much cleaner and lovelier. Your hotel looks great and I've just been perving over the photo of your flat decoration. I am, in short, in love. Do you still get to do knitting circle from new flat? Hope it's not too out of the way and is all lovely. x
